TAMO exists to find mathematical talent wherever it is in Tanzania — not just in well-resourced schools. Students who stand out on the TAMO paper move into training, teacher-led preparation, and eventually national team selection for Africa's and the world's biggest mathematics competitions.

Every member of Team Tanzania followed the same four steps. None of them start anywhere but the TAMO paper.
Camp Qualification Contest
A written screening round open to Form 3–6 students, sat at regional centres including Arusha, Dar es Salaam and Dodoma. In 2026, more than 5,000 students took part.
The TAMO national paper
Contestants sit a rigorous problem set designed to test reasoning, not recall — the same spirit as PAMO and IMO problems, scaled for secondary students.
Rising Stars training camp
Top scorers join a residential camp run with the African Olympiad Academy (AOA), with additional coaching support from partners including Numbers Foundation, sharpening olympiad-level problem solving under experienced mentors.
Team Tanzania
The strongest performers represent the country at the Pan-African Mathematics Olympiad, the International Mathematical Olympiad and the East Africa Mathematics Olympiad. In 2026, Tanzania sent students to IMO in Shanghai and PAMO in Yamoussoukro, and three top scorers earned full AOA scholarships.

Inside the Rising Stars training camp
Thirty-four of Tanzania's top-performing secondary students — drawn from a pool of more than 5,000 who sat the qualifying round — spent five residential days in Dodoma training with mentors from the African Olympiad Academy. Nearly half of the students selected were young women, continuing a deliberate push for gender balance in competitive mathematics. Six students went on to form Team Tanzania for the International Mathematical Olympiad in Shanghai and the Pan-African Mathematics Olympiad in Yamoussoukro, and three top performers earned full scholarships to continue their studies at the African Olympiad Academy.

What exactly is TAMO?+
The Tanzania Mathematics Olympiad is a national competition for secondary school students, organised under the Mathematical Association of Tanzania (MAT/CHAHITA). It's the first step on the pathway to Tanzania's national mathematics teams.
Who is eligible to compete?+
Any secondary school student in Form 3 through Form 6, at a registered school anywhere in Tanzania.
How do I register?+
Registration runs through your school's mathematics department and regional coordinators. Speak to your teacher, or reach out to us directly and we'll point you to the right contact.
Is there a fee to take part?+
A small registration fee has typically applied, historically around TZS 10,000 per student — schools handle the collection. Confirm the current amount with your coordinator.
What happens after the national paper?+
Top scorers are invited to the Rising Stars training camp. From there, the strongest performers are selected for Team Tanzania at PAMO, IMO and EAMO.
Can teachers get involved without their students competing?+
Yes — teacher workshops on olympiad-style instruction run throughout the year, independent of whether your school has students shortlisted.
